Antique Zinc Coins – How to Spot and Collect Them
Antique zinc compose a class of coins that are not common in most modern coin denominations. Most of the common coins today have some kind of backing, such as plastic or paper. Not so with these old coins, which were made with metal pieces of the day. Many collectors enjoy acquiring these coins because they are unique and have a rich history. Another kind of antique zinc is a Zinc dollar piece. Zinc dollars are often associated with the New York School dollar, which had a design that was very popular among wealthy families at the time. This type of coin has a plain surface, but has the classic Zinc design. It also has a raised alloyed background, which can be stamped or embossed.
Zinc half crowns are another type that are popular. Unlike their American counterparts, these half-crown coins have a rim with the phrase “crowned heads” on it. This is a popular coin to find for those collectors who like to get a good deal on them. They were made in many different sizes. Usually, they were minted for a year and half. This makes them an even more sought after coin.
Zinc double crowns are a great addition to any collection. Unlike most antique zinc coins, these have the two crowns on the same side of the coin. This makes them unique in the sense that they can be rare and hard to find. The actual design of these is that of a crown and two bars on either side. It is this unique design that adds to the value of the coin.
The copper alloy used to make the gold coins was extremely valuable at the time. It was so valuable that the American government banned the importation of all copper coins. This included the American half eagle and half crown styles. The only way to acquire gold copper coins today is to purchase them from either an antique dealer or directly from the metal smith. There are some dealers that will accept antique zinc that came from the United States, but be prepared to pay a premium price.
