The origin of the Zippos can be traced back to 1932, when George Blaisdell, a Pennsylvania native, designed the first lighter, relocating the chimney inside the lighter. He also added a sturdy hinged metal case, as well as a low price tag of $1.95. As a result, the Zippos became a hit and quickly gained popularity. The early models, known as the “Zippos,” had a hinge on the outside of the case and were often issued to servicemen during WWII.
Zippo lighters are a popular item for collectors, but the best pieces have unique designs and are often limited editions. Fortunately, there are still many inexpensive, pristine vintage Zippos available for collectors to consider. One auction for a set of six pristine vintage Zippos, for example, sold for $40, or $6 each. Rarer pieces, however, can fetch higher prices. Besides the standard Black Crackle Zippo lighter, there are many variations on this iconic lighter. While it may not be as stylish as today’s version, the Black Crackle version was responsible for launching the brand. It was slightly larger than its predecessors and finished with chrome or nickel, as well as black crackle paint. The black crackle finish was originally intended to frighten enemy snipers away.
